Artist  Statement 2024

Born in Shanghai, China and now based in Los Angeles, I have been illustrating my long-term observations of the cities and cultural phenomenons around me with a vivid psychedelic visual language. With organic paper-based media, I manipulate colors and rhythms through the direct gestures of pressing and rubbing by hand, seeking to craft novel sensory experiences while giving shape to the fluidity of time and melody. Meanwhile, I am always fascinated by exploring the edges between realism and illusions. By visualizing the invisible associations among daily existence, subconscious, and memory, I become a vessel that carries and incubates tactile movements.

Each of my short film work could speak for themselves individually.

Fireworks(2022) is a documentary animation that portrays the vibrant traditions of Shanghai Spring Festival. Told in the vanishing Shanghai dialect and rendered in oil pastels, it reflects on the tensions between family and personal growth, capturing the quiet truth of life’s emotional cycles—joy and sorrow, parting and reunion. Becoming(2024) adopts a child’s perspective to trace how a girl’s developing identity is influenced by the behaviors and attitudes of those around her during formative years. Mr. Doug(2023) combines the image of a 3D grave with sand animation to tell the story of a volunteer’s death caused by negligence in experiments. Drawing inspiration from the fable of Frankenstein, the film discusses failure as a meaningful process for creators, as well as the reproduction of invalidated creations .

Across these works, I construct imaginative subconscious worlds, attempting to sketch a psychological reality that transcends the tangible, aiming to reach the viewer’s spirit through the visceral experience of the body.
